As a parent, no matter what age your child is, you have the responsibility to share your wisdom with them. The lessons we learned over the years can help make life a little easier. Our advice can help shape them into hardworking and kind adults. While some advice may seem simple, it is often the simple little things that we hold onto for life. Here are 10 pieces of honest and meaningful advice for my son.
Meaningful Advice for My Son
My son is a toddler, but these are things I want him to know as he grows into a man.
1. Keep God With You
No matter where you go or what you do, keep God in your heart. Hide his precious words, for there will be times you need to hear them. Times when it seems no one else understands … but God always does.
2. It’s Okay to Make Mistakes
Perfection isn’t possible. Years can be wasted wondering how much better you could have done. Instead, do the best you can and then let it go. If you make a mistake, it isn’t the end of the world. Be it school, work, or relationships. There’s tomorrow and it’s a chance to do better.
3. Don’t Take Rejection to Heart
There are many types of people in this world. Some you will get along with and some you won’t. When someone doesn’t receive you well, don’t take it to heart. You’re wonderful…and they’re missing out. When people say negative things, don’t let them settle in your soul. Stay confident and don’t let it bother you. You’re a good person and you’re going to great places.
4. Don’t Share Yourself with Everyone
Everyone doesn’t deserve you, your friendship, or your time. Be selective of the company you keep. Surround yourself with good people who appreciate your presence.
“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” – Mark Twain
5. Fall in Love Carefully
Find that woman that means everything to you…but that you mean everything to as well. Make sure she’s loving, kind, and God-fearing. Would she make a good mother to your children? Do you see yourself growing old with her?
6. Think Hard About College
Unless things change, college is really expensive. If you aren’t sure about it, go to a community college or trade school. Then you can decide if you want to pursue a more expensive and lengthy education. It will save you a lot of money. Also, make sure your career path requires your type of education/degree.
7. Be Kind to Others
A little kindness goes a long way. Treat others with the kindness and compassion you hope to be treated with. If everyone did this, the world would be such a better place.
“Remember, there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” – Scott Adams
8. Be Kind to Yourself
Respect your body…it’s a temple. Love yourself and believe in yourself. When life gets busy don’t forget to take time for self-care. Get a fresh haircut, take a trip to the gym or just relax with some snacks and a movie. Take time off for a mental health day when needed.
9. Save Money
It doesn’t have to be a lot (it adds up over time) but always put something away for a rainy day. If your job offers it, set up a 401k. It will help you when it’s time to retire or in case of an emergency. Use credit cards sparingly to build your credit. Shop at discount stores when you can. You will save a lot of money on the same products. That extra money can be saved.
10. Have Fun
My last piece of advice is to have fun. Life is so serious at times and it will be stressful. Don’t forget to joke and laugh. Take time off work to vacation or staycation, relax and do activities you enjoy. No specific number of days is promised to us, so enjoy each day as much as you can!
My greatest wish for you, my son is to live a happy and healthy life. I want you to be a great man…a great husband and father. I want to know that God loves you. Your dad and I love you more than you could ever imagine. We love the boy you are now and love the man you will one day become.
What meaningful advice would you give your son or daughter?
